NEW YORK (AP) — NBC is fighting amateur with amateur.

Rival ABC is pinning much of its hopes for summer success behind an interactive new talent show, "Rising Star." When it debuted Sunday, NBC marked the occasion with a special version of its own successful "America's Got Talent" to compete in the same time slot.

Mission accomplished. NBC's more established show beat "Rising Star" by nearly 3 million viewers.

ABC says its show depends on viewer participation, and it was heartened by the 5.6 million votes cast for the competitors on Sunday night.

The U.S.-Portugal soccer match was the most-watched event on TV last week. It wasn't included in the prime-time rankings because the game coverage started at 5 p.m. Sunday.
