Gas prices have hit an all-time high for this time of year. The national average for a gallon of regular is now $3.53 and experts say the national average could hit four dollars by May.
Here in the Capital Region, we are already paying an average of $3.82.
For drivers, the visit to the gas station gets more frustrating by the day.
“I looked at it yesterday and it was $3.79,” said Guilderland resident Vivell Perez.
“They’re going up two cents every couple days,” said Bob Paigo of Gloversville.
Gas prices have spiked 25 cents since the beginning of January, hitting a record high for this time of year.
“It’s just getting terrible, I can’t imagine what’s going to happen in the summertime,” Perez said.
Well, why wait till summer?
Experts say by May, we could be paying $4.25 for a gallon of gas.
“Oh my gosh that's a lot, it’s going to be hard,” said Kristina Zabinski of Guilderland who travels about 350 miles a week for work.
She says she fills up every four days at $85 a pop.
“You have to drive so you just have to do it,” Zabinski said.
Paigo agrees, he spends about $60 to fill his tank.
“I have to fill up every two or two and a half days,” Paigo said.
Like many drivers, the price at the pump has got him thinking of some money-saving lifestyle changes.
“I am either looking at a motorcycle or something small,” he said.
“I am going to have to buy a bike,” Perez said laughing.
“We're going to have to do less traveling,” said Steven Rodriguez of Guilderland.
Experts say these higher gas prices could hurt consumer spending and some much-needed economic growth.
March and April are typically the months when we see the sharpest increases and it looks like this year will be no different.
