Arthritis is a problem plaguing people all across the world. With the various types of arthritis, treatment is key. Dr. Sunil Abraham, a rheumatologist with Ellis Rheumatology Associates explains in today's health minute.
"Arthritis is a huge problem across the United States and the world because it is the leading cause of disability among Americans," says Dr. Abraham.
"There are multiple types of arthritis ranging from the most common osteoarthritis. That usually affects the hips, knees and hands," says Dr. Abraham. "Then there's less common types such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout and other diseases even more rare such as lupus."
Dr. Abraham says that treatment options are very dependent on the type of arthritis you have.
"With osteoarthritis, one of the most important things to do is to stay active, weightloss, proper nutrition, and to be in an exercise program that is geared toward your arthritis," says Dr. Abraham. "Rheumatoid arthritis is very different. That's when your immune system is attacking itself, attacking your joints. So therapy is geared towards calming down your immune system, at the same time, making sure the medications aren't doing any harm."
