State police say an on-duty state trooper has been killed in a car crash in Greene County.
He has been identified as 30-year-old David J. Lane of Dexter, NY.
Lane has four years of service with the state police.
The crash happened around 2:30 this afternoon in the area of Route 32 and Cairo Junction Road in Catskill.
Police tell us Lane was heading northbound on Route 32 in his patrol car, when he tried to pass another northbound vehicle,
The two vehicles made contact, and Lane's car went off the road, hitting a telephone pole.
Trooper Lane worked out of the State Police Catskill station.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that Lane served in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Army's C Company, 307th Engineer Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division.

They protect us? From what? They are a military force used to carry out the establishments orders in the domestic arena. Police do not prevent crime, they merely round up those they are told to, whether to raise revenue, appease the ignorant masses, or to intimidate those who do not accept the status quo. When was the last time someone went on record saying "I would have committed a crime in this instance, but the fear of police prevented me." So spare me the special young man crap. Maybe he was an alright guy, maybe he wasn't, but I owe him no assumption of decency due to the sole fact that he has a badge. The police in this country are a tool of those corrupt politicians who have assaulted our liberties and abused our trust. And by the way, I am from a cop family, and dated a cops daughter for 10 years. I am aware that you can not judge one individual solely on the company he keeps, however there is an insidious rush to slap the hero label on every fallen cop without any question. Also, if you keep questionable company over time and never question the wrongs you have witnessed, what exactly DOES that say about your character?

My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Lane's family and loved ones. In my career as a Probation Officer I have had the good fortune to meet many special young men and women in the State Police who each and every day put their lives on the line to protect us. This is a great tragedy and loss for all of us.
