Kyle Otto is driven by targets. His focus, aim and precision all matter.

"That's the best feeling when you're really into it," said Kyle Otto, a 17-year-old from Chatham.

He started shooting a year and a half ago after trying it out at a STRIDE Adaptive Sports Clinic, then getting help from an air rifle coach at RPI.

"I've loved it since," said Kyle.

Already, it has taken him places. He has been to tournaments all over the country and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

"He jumped up 100 points in a week, it was phenomenal," said Bruce Otto, his father.

He even went to the US National Championships in Georgia.

"I got first place out of everyone there," said Kyle.

His natural talent has served him well. But it is his determination that could take him to the top. His new target is the Paralympics. Kyle, has cerebral palsy.

Like most precision shooters, Kyle has found what works for him. His biggest challenge is keeping the nerves out of his head.

"I just say to myself, it's just another shot, it's no different from the last shot," he said.

And then there are the challenges he faces from others.

"Some people tend to look at able versus disabled in a different way," said Kyle.

But competition after competition, Kyle is proving that ability comes from within. And he is learning something about himself along the way.

"I've learned that there's always something open for me," said Kyle. "If I don't succeed in one thing I can always try something else. Luckily this was my something else."

Something that has been life changing.

"You are shooting with high class shooters all the time and you succeed with all those obstacles, it is such a good feeling," said Kyle.

"We are getting the opportunity to represent the United States," said Bruce.

World class athletes often find themselves as a source of inspiration. The way Kyle lives his life what he has accomplished are worth striving for.

"Here's something we found works well for Kyle and it can work well for others," said Bruce.

"I shoot because I love the sport and if something better comes out of that," said Kyle, "that's just the icing on top of the cake."

Kyle is preparing for the World Cup in October. If he shoots well there he could qualify for the US Paralympic team. The sport and his goal are expensive. If you would like to help Kyle with his dream you can visit his website.
