Jean M. Auel's classic novels "The Clan of the Cave Bear" are set to be adapted for the small screen.

Ron Howard is executive producing a mini-series based on the bestsellers and "Maleficent" screenwriter Linda Woolverton has penned the pilot episode, which is set to debut on Lifetime in 2015.

Auel's six-book series, which has sold over 60 million copies globally, is set more than 25,000 years ago when Neanderthals shared the planet with the first early modern humans.

The books inspired a 1986 movie, starring Daryl Hannah.

You can't do a mini series on six books. In order to do this series right it has to be a 4 part movie at least.... or a television series. It will be a disaster as a mini series.. rushed just like the first movie. Only the readers will understand what I am saying. It's one of the best book series ever written. With today's film quality it could be spectacular. A mini series is just going to screw up this once in a lifetime opportunity to film these books. and you just cannot end the mini-series with one book.. Ayla's whole story needs to be told.
