Police in California have confirmed Scott Weiland has been at the center of a major mix-up after a man claiming to be the rocker was locked up on a drugs charge.

On Thursday, reports emerged suggesting the former Stone Temple Pilots star had been jailed on charges of methamphetamine possession and burglary.

Police subsequently revealed the singer had been behind bars for a month following his arrest on July 26, but after seeing the story, Weiland, 46, spoke out to insist he is not in jail and has not been arrested.

In a video posted on his website, the star said, "Hi this is Scott Weiland... I just got done reading something very interesting, a nice piece of fiction... that says I was in jail... I have actually been touring, writing and recording my new album. This is the studio we are in right now, a Los Angeles studio... All I want to say to fans is... Don't worry, don't fret, it's a lie."

Officials at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have now confirmed the confusion was sparked by a man who identified himself as Weiland at the time of his arrest, according to TMZ.com.

The website reports the suspect has now been identified through fingerprint analysis as Jason Michael Hurley, 44, and he is now facing an additional charge of providing false information.
