Sleepy Hollow's season finale was full of betrayal, but in the most unlikely places.
The finale finds Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Ichabod (Tom Mison) at odds when she believes he'll be unable to sacrifice his wife Katrina (Katia Winter) for the greater good. Finding a secret message from George Washington within his Bible, Ichabod and Abbie set out to find the secret burial site of the first president, where they discover a map of purgatory. But Andy (John Cho), now turned into Moloch's warrior, attacks them, forcing Abbie to kill him. Before his death, however, Andy comes out of his reverie to tell Abbie to destroy the map lest Moloch use it to win the war.
When Ichabod learns the consequences of possessing the map, he burns it, seemingly putting an end to Moloch's potential reign. But, because he has a photographic memory, Ichabod later recreates the map with the intention of rescuing Katrina.
Why Sleepy Hollow should keep its big secret under wraps
Meanwhile, Frank (Orlando Jones) is unable to explain the events that happened at the cabin without sounding crazy. When the police set their sights on arresting his daughter for the murder of the priest, Frank falsely confesses to save her.
After a hilarious moment when Ichabod accidentally comes across a war reenactment enabling him to buy new clothes from his century, the sin eater Henry Parrish (John Noble) comes with news that Moloch will raise War of the Four Horsemen during the upcoming solar eclipse. The only way to stop War's arrival is with the use of witchcraft, so Ichabod must admit the truth about his re-creation of the map so he and Abbie can rescue Katrina from purgatory.
When they enter purgatory, Abbie and Ichabod both have their dreams come true. For Abbie, she imagines Corbin (Clancy Brown) and Andy are still alive. She's back recovering in Sleepy Hollow after an accident at Quantico. Ichabod, back in England after the war, reunites with his father (played by Victor Garber). Should either of them partake in any drinking or eating, they will accept their place in purgatory and be trapped forever.
Sleepy Hollow boss "stunned" by show's success
Fortunately, they both overcome their challenges, but Katrina refuses to leave purgatory or else the veil between the two worlds would drop. The only way she'll leave is if one of them stays in her place. Abbie decides to stay behind, fulfilling the prophecy that Ichabod would deliver Abbie to Moloch. Katrina promises to return after they prevent War's arrival.
But when Katrina and Ichabod find War's apparent grave, they learn that there's a traitor within. It turns out Parrish is actually War, who had been unearthed ages ago — which young Abbie and Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) witnessed when they were kids. Worse yet, War is actually their son Jeremy, who hands over Katrina to Headless, while enslaving Ichabod inside the coffin he was stuck in for centuries. Abbie, meanwhile, is trapped in purgatory where her memories of War's resurrection had been locked away.
