Pinched nerves can be extremely painful, and if left untreated, can cause serious problems. A pinched nerve is literally pinched at some point along its path by bone, but you may experience pain somewhere else along the nerve. In many cases, pinched nerves occur in the spine when a disc slips from between the vertebrae and presses on the sensitive nerves in the area. The result can be pain in the feet, legs, and back, as well as muscle weakness. Pinched nerves in the neck or shoulder can cause pain in the arm and back, as well as tingling and numbness in the fingers. It’s common for pregnant women and people with other types of back pain to develop pinched nerves, but anyone can suffer from this condition regardless of health or age. It’s important to have pinched nerves treated as soon as possible. Over time this condition can lead to permanent nerve damage in the limbs or area that the nerve affects. Damage to the nerves can cause a loss of sensation in the affected area and reduced mobility. A chiropractor may be able to treat your pinched nerves with chiropractic adjustments and manipulation of the spine. This treatment may relieve pressure on the painful nerve, and possibly realign the bones, joints, or discs that are pinching the nerve. In serious cases, surgery may be needed to relieve pressure on the nerve and save the area from further damage.
