ALBANY, N.Y. – A softball tournament was held Friday in honor of a Clifton Park teenager who lost her life in a car accident.

The 2nd annual Deanna Rivers Memorial Softball Tournament was held in Albany Friday afternoon. It kicked off with a “Giving Back Clinic” to teach young children how to play softball.

Rivers’ parents said because their daughter wanted to be a school teacher, there’s no better way to honor her memory than by teaching others.

“That’s what Deanna was about,” her father Brian Rivers said. “It was family and touching a lot of people’s hearts and holidays and softball and having a great time with everybody.”

“Stuff like this, it’s an up day for us when we get to see her friends and other parents, and you get the hugs and the smiles and everything. It helps,” her mother Debbie Rivers said.

Four teams comprised of players from around the Capital Region that knew Deanna competed in the championship game while wearing her number 19 on their backs. The tournament allowed the players to feel close to Deanna again.

“I think of her most when I’m standing on second base, running or whatever,” friend Anna Cochis said. “She’s always there.”

The tournament helped raise funds for children and the MVP of the tournament received a $500 scholarship.
