AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Amsterdam officials are hoping to bring a Las-Vegas style casino to their area.

One look at Amsterdam's downtown scene at night and many visitors might say there is not a lot happening.

"In a depressed area for a while, people getting older, losing houses," said Edward Russo, a council member.

The City Mayor and many Council Members are hoping to change Amsterdam's nightlife which is why many of them are supporting bringing a casino to the community.

In a majority vote, council members voted 3-1 on a resolution to throw their hat into the ring, sending a message to New York State that they want to be considered as a site of one of the state's newest casinos.

"As an ageing municipality we're looking for new industry tourism and recreation is a billion dollar industry," said  Mayor Ann Thane.

The only member of the meeting to not vote in favor of the resolution was Alder woman Valerie Beekman.

Residents, including Richard Conti, who grew up in the area, believes the change would be for the better.

"I lived in Vegas for a while and casinos employ 3,000-4,000 people. You got dealers, landscapers, people who do the laundry," said Conti.

The area city officials would want to put the casino would be right off the Thruway by Exit 27 near Route 30 which is more than 500 acres of land.

The siting process starts in March when requests for applications are sought by the State Resort Gaming Facility Location Board.
