SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Three people have been arrested after stealing baby formula from a Price Chopper, a form of theft that is more common than most think.
On Thursday, Saratoga Springs Police arrested 23 year old Geoffrey Pickering of Hudson Falls, 23 year old Brett Disanto of Argyle and 22 year old Daisy Ripley of Argyle following a ring of thefts at local Price Choppers.
According to Saratoga Police, the three stole $1,600 worth of Enfamil baby formula from the Price Chopper on Railroad Avenue and at the store on Ballston Avenue between September 17th and October 21st.
However, police say the formula thefts didn't stop there. On October 22nd, police arrested the three for allegedly stealing more baby formula at a Price Chopper in Clifton Park.
Lt. Bob Jillson says the three could have stolen the powdered formula to use in drugs. The formula is sometimes used to dilute heroin and methamphetamine or to stretch the product when supplies run low.
Lt. Jillson says another reason people steal the product some have referred to as liquid gold, is to resell on the black market or to other stores.
Stores like Price Chopper often lock up baby formula and keep a limited supply on the shelf to try and reduce the theft.
Pickering and Ripley were charged with 7 counts of Petit Larceny each. DiSanto was also charged with 7 counts of Petit Larceny and 7 counts of Burglary in the 3rd Degree, police say The Burglary charge stems from an incident where Disanto was told by Price Chopper staff he was not allowed on any of their property.
Police say none of the formula was recovered.
