RENSSELAER, N.Y. - Bishop Edward Scharfenberger chose his favorite pizza in the Capital Region as part of a unique food challenge.

Fifteen local pizza restaurants competed to be named "Bishop's Choice."

The idea started when Bishop Scharfenberger said he was looking for a new favorite pizza place, shortly after he was ordained in the Albany Catholic Diocese. Finding a new pizza joint has now turned into a fundraising event for Catholic Charities, with all proceeds going to the programs it supports.

Bishop Scharfenberger chowed down on more than a dozen different pizzas Monday night. He said Monday’s event was the best part of his day.

“They put out 17 different slices, and the name of the pizzeria was on the bottom of the plate,” he said. “Originally, they were going to blindfold me, but I guess they decided against it, so I cut off a little piece and I tasted the crust because to me pizza’s all about the crust.”

The bishop’s choice pizza came from The Orchard Tavern in Albany.
