EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - An East Greenbush councilwoman changed her mind on a proposed casino plan, and now she says inappropriate comments about her were made on a blog.
Mary Ann Matters initially supported the Capital View Casino and Resort, which is one of the several casinos proposed in upstate New York for a license. But now she’s against it, and she made her opinion public.
“As time went on, I started realizing that the project was being incrementally downsized,” she said.
Matters said she doesn’t believe the smaller proposal will provide the same economic boost nor will it bring jobs or reduce property taxes.
Supporters of the casino sent Matters a link to the blog East Greenbush Matters. The blog claims to offer a humorous look at politics in the town. But many of the posts reference Matters, including negative comments about her intelligence and mental faculties. One pledged to “get even.”
“I was offended beyond belief, and I was scared,” Matters said.
Matters filed a complaint with the New York State Police and contacted town supervisor Keith Langley.
“Yeah, I’ve been very busy, but alerting me to blogs that have been in existence for several years; I don’t know what I can do as a public official,” Langley said.
The blog remains active and state police said there is not much they can do, but Matters said she won’t be swayed by it.
“I will always do my job on the town board for the residents diligently and responsibly,” she said. “I will not let any of this deter me.”
