TROY, N.Y. – A Troy charter school will not have its contract renewed by New York State.

SUNY's Charter Schools Institute recommended the closure of the ARK Community School on River Street.

The Institute says ARK failed to reach its student achievement and is not meeting or even coming close to annual student achievement goals.

School officials disagree with the decision, and met Thursday to discuss their options.

"We are contesting what they're saying. We are saying that that is not true. Last year in the common core testing era we did not perform as well but our scores for the four years prior were certainly in the acceptable range and we were never given any indication that we were a failing school," said the school's principal, Dr. Mary Theresa Streck.

"We are committed to working with the Troy City School District and other area schools to provide a smooth transition for the students and families of the Ark.  The Institute will be sending a letter to the parents of the Ark explaining the decision and making them aware of other schooling options in the area,"said Susan Miller Barker, Executive Director of the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.
