ALBANY, N.Y. - As if the weather hasn't drove most drivers nuts lately, the remaining snow and ice on the roadways are hiding one of our cars worst enemies -- potholes.

However, residents are able to do a lot to avoid the potholes and fix car tires if they get damaged.

Many drivers are going to air pumps or even saying goodbye to their wheels altogether because potholes are causing a lot of damage.

"We've seen a lot of pinched tires," said Sandra Hameroff, the Chief Family Organizer at Broadway Auto Clinic. "The tire and the rim kind of compress to one another and thus you have a blowout tire."

Many roads across the Capital Region are falling apart.

"Icy, there's a lot of slush on the roads at some parts," explained resident Nicholas Romand.

Romand said that while driving recently the front end of his car slammed down.

Drivers are reminded that there is a right time to brake before hitting a pothole.

"You want to break and slow down before it," said Scott Carlone, the manager of Broadway Auto Clinic.

Carlone also suggests listening for shakes and vibrations.

"First chance you get when you get to where you are going, pull over check the wheel that you thought you hit the pothole with see if there is any visual damage," said Carlone.

Just knowing if your wheel is more prone to damage can help you diagnose a problem.

"There's not much room here for the rubber, so when it hits the pothole it squeezes it," said Hameroff

Smartly avoiding those potholes can save you big bucks. Aside from giving you a flat tire, they can throw off your wheel alignment. If you hit one, and you think it did some damage, a safe bet now would be to get it inspected as soon as possible.
