EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – Dozens of East Greenbush residents turned out Thursday to voice their opposition of the proposed casino for the town.

The owners of the Saratoga Casino and Raceway are hoping to build a $300 million resort casino in the town of East Greenbush. The plan would be to build a 100,000 square foot casino featuring world class gaming, dining, entertainment along with a hotel and high-end retail.

Some residents said the proposed casino is an effort by the town board to steam roll over their concerns.

“The casino movement would like us to feel like we are powerless and we don’t have a choice and it’s a done deal,” resident Dwight Jenkins said. “But in fact, we are not powerless. We are far more powerful than we realize if we just work together.”

Protestors are worried that people may fall prey to gambling addictions.

Churchill Downs, Inc. has partnered with the Saratoga Casino and Raceway. It said the casino resort will create 1,700 permanent jobs and 1,700 construction jobs.

We aren't being steamrolled. This town needs a casino in these economic times. We are very lucky that we have the opportunity for a casino right here. I have listened and listened and now I'm finally speaking out but not in the negative direction. Think of all the jobs that will be coming. Think of your taxs finally going down. And think of the great entertainment that we will be getting. For everyone out three picketing against it, you can bet these same people will walk in the doors of this casino at one time or another. This is the Empire State and we should take this opportunity the thrive with the Casino here. Your kids and grandchildren will have more opportunitys for jobs. Look around at all the business's that went out of business. I think the town did the RIGHT THING jumping on this opportunity when it was presented to them. What really annoys me is if anyone try's to defend it they are treated rudely and from what I hear are booood at. REALLY! That's adult..... And these same people who are doing this want to be taken seriously. Everybody needs to just calm down....instead of just thinking about negativity, start thinking about what the good is in this opportunity. Do you really think the town is just trying to aggravate people or is the town trying to make a good decision for us that you will finally see down the road. I think Keith Langley should be applauded by jumping on this.

Thank you so much for covering this story. This suburb is being steamrolled by a multimillion dollar gaming corporation. The Town Board was elected by less then 2500 voters in a town of 16000 people. This local election occurred before the casino was even an idea. The Town Board election was to select reps to determine the height of new homes, not granting 5 people (the majority of who are connected to construction) the absolute power to decide whether a 350 million dollar casino should be allowed to swallow this suburban town. The town board refuses to allow the citizens to vote on this unanticipated monumental decision which will effect our children, grand children and every generation thereafter. Only accurate News overage can help Eastgreenbush.
