GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – A vacant Guilderland mansion was destroyed by an early morning fire on Tuesday.
Officials say the fire started just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the home at 3494 East Lydius Street. The 10,000 square-foot mansion was vacant at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported.
By the time fire crews arrived on scene, more than half of the home, which has 6 bedrooms and 7 ½ baths, was engulfed in flames.
The home had been vacant for some time and needed about $140,000 worth of repairs. The listing agent, Richard Lyons of Prudential Manor Homes said the home was bought in 2007 by the present owner for around $775,000. Town documents listed the owner as William Selig. Lyons said his plan was to fix the home and sell it. But when the housing market tanked the plans changed. Currently it was in the process of a short sale for 599,000 considerable less than the last town appraisal of $1 million dollars.
Neighbors say the home was once looked at by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield.
Guilderland Police closed East Lydius Street between Siver Road and DiCaprio Park as crews worked on the scene.
A cause for the fire was not immediately available.
