COBLESKILL, N.Y. -- An elderly man is recovering well at a local hospital after being rescued from almost freezing in his home.
Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond says he paid the unnamed elderly man a visit at Cobleskill Regional Hospital on Wednesday.
He says the 70-year-old man was found Tuesday at his remote Summit home, suffering from frostbite, hypothermia, and dehydration.
Desmond says the man is doing much better, but doctors say he requires further medical attention.
The Director for the County Office for the Aging, Sandy Dungee, says they would have helped out with food and heating assistance, but they have no records of the man ever requesting any help.
Dungee says resistance to help is not that uncommon.
She says this story is a rare one, but it underscores the importance of checking in on our more vulnerable neighbors -- especially during winter
