SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Schenectady Police Department says the victim of a shooting that occurred late Tuesday night near Mont Pleasant Middle School has died.

Schenectady Police say the victim, 24-year-old William Riddick of Albany, was located in a vehicle at around midnight in the area of 1121 Forest Road with a gunshot wound to the head.  They say a second man was in that vehicle and suffered minor injuries, but police aren't releasing many details citing the ongoing investigation. Riddick was treated on scene by members of the Schenectady Fire Department and transported to Ellis Hospital.

Police say Riddick was later transferred to Albany Medical Center and died Wednesday morning from wounds sustained in the shooting.

Police say the incident started with a two-vehicle car accident near Orchard Street and First Avenue in Schenectady, leading to the shooting in the area. Riddick's vehicle ran into a fence near a field on the Mont Pleasant Middle School property and then stopped in a nearby parking lot.

The second car involved was seen nearby, and police are canvassing the surrounding area and neighborhoods to attempt to locate the vehicle.

Schenectady City School District Public Information Officer Karen Corona said Mont Pleasant Middle School would still be in session Tuesday without any delays.

Police are not sure if the incident was random. Detectives and officers are still investigating the incident.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Schenectady Police Department's Detective Division at (518) 382-5245 or the T.I.P.S. line at (518) 788-6566.
