ALBANY N.Y. –In New York State deaths from heroin overdoses have doubled from 2008 to 2012. According to expert’s heroin is purer and cheaper than it used to be.
State lawmakers say now is the time to act and get involved in heroin education.
At the Capitol Tuesday afternoon lawmakers will detail legislation to fight heroin abuse during the Senate Democratic Conference.
Six bills have been introduced to help better combat the growing heroin epidemic.
The legislation includes increasing penalties for selling opioids that result in death, equipping first responders with overdose-reversal drugs, requiring health insurance providers to cover rehabilitation and anti-addiction medications, and creating a teen heroin abuse PSA campaign.
Lawmakers have already been active in their communities to raise awareness about this epidemic.
Senate Majority- Republicans have been hosting forums throughout the state. The last forum was held in Troy last week.
