NEW YORK – A former Siena basketball player returned to the United States over the weekend after anti-government protests in Ukraine turned deadly.

Ronald Moore was playing professional basketball in a city two hours away from the massive anti-government protests in Kiev. But when an attempt was made to take over the administration building in Cherkassy only a block from his home, Moore decided it was time to return home.

“It’s unfortunate what’s happening over there, but my safety is more important than basketball and to be home is a great feeling,” he said.

Moore heard first-hand accounts of the violence from his translator’s brothers who were among the protestors in the capital city, but he didn’t hear direction from the United States State Department.

“Not really knowing what was going on, what was going to happen at any moment; it’s definitely an uneasy feeling,” he continued.

Moore said he hopes to play professional basketball in Italy. He leaves for the country Wednesday.

An arrest warrant has been issued for former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych; however, authorities do not know his location.

Yanukovych was ousted as president Saturday. Authorities said he tried to board a charter plane in the eastern city of Donetsk, but he was turned away because he did not have documents.

Authorities said he is wanted for the mass killings of civilians.
