LANSINGBURGH, N.Y. - A Lansingburgh High School senior is credited with saving one of his teacher's lives Tuesday when she was choking in class.

High school senior Ben Bayly was taking a quiz in his English class when the incident happened.

"I stood up, went up to her, patted her on the back and asked her if she was okay," says Bayly. "She said no and put her hands to her throat."

Bayly says what happened next is kind of foggy, but remembers doing three to four abdominal thrusts on his teacher.

"One thought I remember is, 'is anyone going to do anything,' and then I just stood and got up to her," he says.

Bayly ended up saving his teacher's life.

Lansingburgh High School Principal Frank Macri says he couldn't be prouder.

"I was amazed, ran up to the classroom, gave him a giant hug and I sent an email to the entire staff, telling them what a great deed he did," says Macri.

Macri says what is ironic about the entire incident is on Wednesday all high school students participated in a scheduled CPR and Heimlich Maneuver training class, given by the Troy Firefighter's Union 86.

While students did not become certified, they were taught the basics on what to do in case of an emergency.

But on Tuesday, Bayly already knew what to do.

"Ben is one of those students who goes above and beyond when he needs to," says Macri. "He exemplified what a good student is and what we want our students to be."

"At my house, I was kind of smiling, thinking, I actually did something," adds Bayly. "It didn't sink in until the end of the day."
