WRIGHT, N.Y. – A man accused of using plied to pull permanent teeth from a child’s mouth has pleaded guilty.

According to Schoharie County Officials, Steven Walker, 35, accepted an Alford plea on Monday to felony assault in the second degree. An Alford plea means someone can plead guilty without admitting their guilt.

Walker originally faced two assault counts and two child endangerment counts after State Police said he removed three permanent teeth from the mouth of an 8-year-old mentally handicapped girl.

The girl is the niece of Walker’s wife. The couple became the legal guardians of the girl in June 2012.

Walker was arrested in November 2013 after the girl complained about mouth pain to her aunt and guardian. The girl was then taken to the dentist who contacted the Schoharie County Child Protective Services after it was determined the teeth were forcibly removed.

A family member previously told NEWS10 ABC that the girl would constantly pull out her own teeth.

Police say the girl has since been placed in another foster home.

Walker is scheduled to be sentenced on January 7, 2015 and it is not to exceed four years in State Prison and three years post release supervision.
