Marine stops shoplifter at Colonie Center

COLONIE, N.Y. – Colonie Police say a Marine helped to thwart a thief at Colonie Center on Thursday.

On Thursday morning Luther Thompson, 57, allegedly stole merchandise from Victoria's Secret.

Private First Class Noah McKnight was on duty as he was walking around the food court when he heard security alarms go off at the nearby store.

"I heard an alarm go off behind me, turned around and made eye contact with the guy who was stealing the stuff," said McKnight.

The Marine followed Thompson throughout the mall until police arrived in from of Sears.

"He looked extremely nervous, started running down the back fire emergency exit," said the 18-year-old Marine. "I chased him, I caught up to him, grabbed the bag out of his hand, asked him what he was doing."

McKinght said Thompson told him he was doing nothing wrong. However, after McKnight retrieved the bag, he called 911.

Colonie Police told McKnight they were happy he stepped in and tried to stop Thompson.

Thompson was arrested for Petit Larceny. He is accused of stealing nearly $700 in perfume from Victoria's Secret

The Albany man was released on an appearance ticket to be back in court on December 30th.

McKnight works as a recruiter's assistance with the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Albany.
