COEYMANS, N.Y. – Three middle school students have been charged with Robbery in the 2nd Degree and Gang Assault, both felonies, after an incident on school grounds.
Coeymans Police say they were summoned to the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Middle School on Tuesday by school officials.
The school administrators told police three juveniles, two 13-year-olds and one 12-year-old, attempted to steal money from another student. While the students were attempting to rob the victim, they began to assault him and held him against his will, according to police.
All three juveniles were brought to the Coeymans Police Station and their parents were notified.
Following a meeting with the County Attorney's Office, one of the juveniles was brought to the Capital District Secure Detention Facility and will be in Albany County Family Court on Wednesday.
The other two students were issued appearance tickets for Albany County Probation.
The three students were charged with Unlawful Imprisonment along with the felony charges.
The Coeymans Police Department School Resource Officer worked closely with the Middle School Principal in investigating this case. Coeymans Police Chief Darlington commended the work of the school resource officer and the benefits that stem from having one in a school.
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Interim Superintendent Dr. McCartney stated he was proud of the students who witnessed the robbery and assault, because they became involved in the incident and notified the principal.
