Motorcycle collides with street sweeper in Colonie

A motorcycle driver is dead after he rear-ended a street sweeper and his bike caught fire in the Albany area.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. Saturday on Route 9 in Colonie.

Police say Gary Charbonneau, 46 from Ballston Lake rear-ended a street sweeper that was cleaning the roadway in front of the Colonie landfill.

The motorcycle caught fire and Charbonneau was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the street sweeper, Boyie Maharaj, 55 of Schenectady was taken to Ellis Hospital for evaluation. 

Maharaj is employed by Russell Sweepers, LLC of Clifton Park. They contract with landfill run 'Waste Connections'.

Route 9 was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the accident.
