SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. – Joy has re-entered the Kleinke family’s lives after they lost everything to a fire two weeks ago.
Aimee Kleinke was nine months pregnant at the time and everything she was given during her baby shower was lost. Aimee gave birth to a healthy baby boy earlier this week.
After the fire, the Slingerlands community came together to help the family get back what they lost through fundraisers and donation drives.
Seeing the birth of your child is one thing that’s not replaceable, however. Aimee’s husband, TJ, almost missed the birth because of a scheduled procedure.
TJ suffered burns to his entire right forearm and hand during the March 9 fire.
“I have a little bit of burning on the inside, here, and I don’t have very much sensation,” he said. “It’s all numb.”
TJ was at Westchester Medical Center’s Trauma and Burn Center when he got the call from his wife. He skipped anesthesia, sped through his grafting surgery, signed his discharge papers and made the two hour drive up to Albany Medical Center.
"I ran in, came up here, ten minutes later they were carting her away to the OR and handed me a bunch of gear to get on,” he said. “I don’t know how much longer after that, but it wasn’t very long. They had me come in, and then Thomas was here. It was truly amazing.
Thomas John Kleinke Jr. was born on Monday, March 24.
The Kleinke family said they are very grateful for the community's support after the fire. They said they look forward to moving on and starting the rest of their lives as a family.
