TROY N.Y. – A death in Troy has been deemed suspicious by police.

Troy Police received a report of a possible deceased male inside a third floor apartment around 4:20 a.m. Monday. The body belongs to a man in his 40s located on the third floor of 603 Second Avenue.

Police have not commented on the possible cause of death. However, neighbors say they heard gunshots.

“Yeah, I knew it was gunshots,” neighbor Paula Montange said. “At three o’clock I heard first two shots.”

Montange lives across from the building where police are investigating.

“It sounded like it was outside my window,” she said.

The man was not the only person inside the apartment at the time of the report. Police said they are currently interviewing witnesses, and they said no one has been arrested.

"We are just getting into the investigation. We are working with the District Attorney's Office and the judges. We are processing the crime scene. It is complicated. We have to take our time doing it,” Troy Police Captain Richard Sprague said. “We do have a search warrant to process it. With the technology we have today, sometimes it takes a while. So, I'm not sure how long we'll be here.”

Peter Marks is about to open a business next door to where the incident occurred. The crime scene has left him stunned.

“Very, very surprised,” he said.

Marks said he’s retired from the Troy Police Department and believes it is an isolated incident.

“Not really; this is an individual action I believe,” he said. “Not something that’s going to happen here every day.”

Montange said she’s not surprised police are investigating a suspicious death.

“I think a lot of crime, a lot of drugs,” she said.

The body has since been removed, and Troy Animal Control removed two dogs and one cat from the building on Monday.
