TROY, N.Y. – An early morning double stabbing in Lansingburgh has police focusing their investigation on a man who was also injured.
Neighbors said three young children came running out of a home on Sixth Avenue screaming that their mother was bleeding. Police responded around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday and found two people stabbed. Amber Fernald, 33, was found deceased, and another man only known as Alex was found critically wounded.
Carllotta Fogarty said she recently rented a room to the man known as Alex.
“I don’t believe in my heart that he intentionally came to hurt this woman,” she said.
Fogarty said Alex and Fernald were a couple.
“Amber and Alex was an item,” she said. “They were together. They were lovers.”
Police said a restraining order had been put on Alex.
“There’s a little history here of domestics,” Troy Police Captain Daniel DeWolf said. “I believe there was an order of protection that was in place.”
Friends of Fogarty, like Robin Avers, said Alex would violate the order.
“There was a restraining order against him, and he violated that several times,” she said.
Avers said Alex threatened Amber if she told police he was breaking the order or protection.
“The reason why she didn’t turn him into police is because he threatened to kill her kids,” she said.
But Fogarty doesn’t believe that to be true.
“They’ve had fights, I’m sure,” she said. “I’ve heard it from everybody. He’s told me.”
But Fogarty said he loved her children and looked after her youngest.
“He always took him to my house,” she said. “He always came; played with him. Everything like that. He was like his sidekick.”
Fogarty said she heard Alex leave for work Tuesday morning.
“Usually he leaves the house at four in the morning, but I guess he left at 3:30. I heard the keys rattle in his door,” she said. “So he must have left a half hour early. I don’t know what he walked into.”
Police want answers out of Alex, but they are waiting for him to recover from his wounds to talk. He is currently at Albany Medical Center in critical condition.
“We need to speak to him,” DeWolf said. “The detectives are currently writing up search warrants to continue the process of the scene.”
