WHITEHALL, N.Y. – Several buildings were spray painted throughout the Town of Whitehall with racist and anti-Semitic phrases and now police are looking for who is responsible.

The phrases were sprayed on 20-30 buildings and signs on Buckley Road near Route 4 and Whitehall Central School, according to authorities. The phrases contained threats to and derogatory phrases about black and Jewish people.

Swastikas were also painted.

Police said the vandalism occurred late at night over the weekend.

“[It was] done sometime early Sunday morning or sometime between midnight and 4 a.m.,” Sgt. Daniel Symer said. “We’re talking about bias related graffiti that would be racist, anti-Semitic and hateful in nature.”

They were painted on Big G's Car Wash, an adjacent building and numerous road signs. Symer said the images will be expensive to clean up.

“It’s costing several hundred dollars to repaint,” he said.

But people were out Sunday trying to remove as much of the paint from the high school as possible.

“They were trying to get as much of it removed as possible before the students started going to school today,” Symer said.

Symer said he’s never seen such a crime in his 11-years working in the area.

“Very quiet, rural farming country,” he said. “And this is new to us.”

Anyone with information in the case was asked to call State Police at 642-9455.
