EDINBURG, N.Y. - An off-duty New York State Police investigator has died after the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near the Great Sacandaga Lake in the town of Edinburg on Sunday.
State police say Senior Investigator 55-year-old Timothy J. Cowper of Middle Grove died after crash landing just before 4 p.m. Sunday in a wooded lot. They say witnesses called 911 to say the plane had experienced difficulties.
Authorities say Cowper was an experienced pilot and a 30-year veteran of the state police. They said the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board would investigate with the state police to determine the cause of the crash.
Officials say Cowper was departing from the Plateau Sky Ranch Airport in Edinburg, heading back to the Perth area when the plane went down near Tange Road. The initial investigation reveals the plane may have experienced some mechanical difficulty.
