SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Monday marked the end of the 146th summer meet at the Saratoga Race Course.

Monday is the last day of racing at the track, but it's also the first time in 43 years that legendary announcer Tom Durkin will not be calling the races.

Many people came out to the track to celebrate the unofficial end to summer. One family at the race course says they hold their family reunion on the last day of the track season.

"The last day of the track, we come up we have the whole family and now were expanding quite a bit there's some young ones running around and it's a fun day for everybody,” said Mike McDonald.

McDonald says the family reunion has been a tradition dating back to before his childhood and now, they come every year with at least 40 strong.

"My grandfather brought us up years and years ago, it's been a tradition for the McDonald's since as far as I can remember,” he said.

NYRA Presidents and CEO Chris Kay says that it's a combination of racing, the iconic track, and the fun atmosphere, that draws people like the McDonald's every year since it started 151 years ago.

"You add it all up and it's some place where people want to come year after year after year and that clearly is the case here at the race course,” Kay said.

Kay says this year is no different because, while official numbers aren't in, he says this has been the best year yet. He is even already thinking about 2015.

"You know we made a lot of improvements from last year to this year. We'll make some more for next year,” said Kay.

Something different in the 2015 season will be Tom Durkin's replacement, Larry Comis. A seasoned announcer, Comis is known for calling races like the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders Cup.

Changes or not though, the McDonald's say they will be in the same place next year.

"Every day we do our separate things but we always come together and that's what counts,” says Jen McDonald.
