SATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Legendary announcer Tom Durkin called his last race bringing the end of an era to a close at the Saratoga Race Course.

After calling over 80,000 races in his career, Durkin, who specialized in thoroughbred racing, retired on Sunday.

Fans found Durkin's last day to be bittersweet as they will miss his charismatic voice. Friends and family were at the track to congratulate Durkin on his career.

Durkin has called races from the Triple Crown to the Breeders Cup -- all at his summer home of Saratoga Springs.

The legendary announcer was sure to thank Mayor Joanne Yepsen of Saratoga Springs on his last day for making everything possible. Mayor Yepsen declared August 31 "Tom Durkin Day", as he has become an icon to the city and a person who everyone knows and loves.

"Many happy winning ticket holders heard his voice as music to the ears," said Congressman Paul Tonko.

"I thank him for it and I hope the next guy is as good but he was great. You can listen to his calls all day long," Tom Maloof a fan of Durkin said.

Durkin will return to the track Monday to sign autographs, greet fans, and enjoy the day.
