TROY, N.Y. – The fatal stabbing of a Lansingburgh woman has led to the arrest of a Troy man.
Amber Fernald, 33, was found stabbed to death in her Lansingburgh apartment in the early morning of June 10. Another man, only known as Alex at the time, was also found stabbed. He was taken to Albany Medical Center in critical condition.
An indictment warrant was issued for Alexis Torres, 28, of Troy, Friday. Torres has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree.
“It’s absolutely terrible,” Troy Police Captain Daniel DeWolf said.
Neighbors said in the early morning of June 10 three children came running out of Fernald’s Sixth Avenue home screaming their mother was on the floor bleeding. Police said Torres’ arrest is a breakthrough in the case.
“At least the neighborhood can feel a little bit safer knowing that the person responsible for this is down in the Rensselaer County Jail,” DeWolf said.
Police said Torres was also found with stab wounds in Fernald’s apartment, though they wouldn’t say how he was hurt. However, DeWolf confirmed their investigation points to Torres as the only suspect.
“All the evidence and testimony led to the fact that Alexis Torres is responsible for the horrible murder of Amber Fernald,” he said.
DeWolf also said police believe Torres and Fernald were in a relationship, and an order of protection was issued against Torres to protect Fernald.
Torres has since been released from the hospital and was taken by police to Rensselaer County Court for an arraignment, but the judge wanted Torres to have a better state of mind when charges were read to him since he was still recovering from his injuries.
Police said other charges will be read at arraignment. Torres is scheduled to be arraigned in Rensselaer County Court June 17.
