EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - A Troy woman has been charged after she allegedly left her baby in a hot car, parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot on Tuesday.
The East Greenbush Police Department was contacted by multiple concerned witnesses Tuesday afternoon regarding an infant left strapped in a car seat, unattended, with no air conditioning operating. Witnesses said the car was insecure, with some windows partially down, and that they felt the baby was in a dangerous situation.
When officers arrived, they said a large crowd had surrounded the car. Police used a thermometer and determined that the infant's car seat had reached a temperature over 98 degrees.
Although the toddler did not appear to be in distress, the risk of harm to the baby had
prompted the calls, and based on the circumstances the infant's mother, 22-year-old Jamillah Clay of Troy, has been charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Clay told police that after she parked the car, she got out and forgot the baby.
She is due in East Greenbush Town Court later this month.
