BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. - The former treasurer for the Charlton Fire District was sentenced in Saratoga County Court on Monday after pleading guilty to stealing nearly $500,000.
Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy says the former treasurer of of the Charlton Fire District No. 1, Virginia DeCapria of Charlton, was sentenced to three to nine years in state prison for a charge of Grand Larceny 2nd-degree, and a concurrent state prison term of one to three years for a charge of Tax Fraud 4th-degree.
She pleaded guilty in March to stealing $499,413 between January 2005 and December 2010 to buy items such as iPods, laptops, plastic surgery, cigarettes, and frozen food delivery for her and her family, Murphy says.
"DeCapria stole taxpayer funds which were paid by residents of the fire district for fire protection, not for [herself]," Murphy said.
On behalf of the Charlton Fire District, Terry Hannigan read a statement to the court which detailed how the her theft affected the volunteers of the Charlton Fire District, the Board of Commissioners and ultimately all the residents and taxpayers.
