GLENMONT, N.Y. – A former New York Yankee went on a special shopping spree Friday with a cancer patient from Albany Medical Center.

Nick Rychcik is a childhood cancer patient at Albany Med’s Melody Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders. He was given a $100 gift card as part of “Shop with an MLB Player” sponsored by PepsiCo.

The nine-year-old went shopping in the Glenmont Walmart Supercenter Friday with four-time World Series champion Bernie Williams. The two even rode bicycles through the produce section.

“It was a lot of fun for me. It was the first time that I’ve ridden a bike in a store,” Williams said.

Rychcik took the bike and some video games.

PepsiCo will present a check to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. A portion of the check will support programs at the Melody Center.

Williams said he had fun riding a bike through the aisles, but that’s not why he participates in these programs.

“There’s a lot of kids like Nick who need the acknowledgment and for how brave they are and all the things they’re doing,” he said.

Williams hung around the store after the shopping spree to sign autographs for fans.
