GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – AAA is expecting that the amount of traveling done during the holidays will be down this year.

Price is a large factor into why people are staying home during the holidays.

AAA projects 43.4 million Americans will journey 50-miles or more this Thanksgiving weekend, which is down 1.5-percent from 2012.

Luke Brennan is from just outside Syracuse and packed his truck tight for a trip to Maine, where he plans to go moose hunting.

He has packed survival gear which including sleeping bags, a portable heater, fuel and propane.

While Brennan isn't leaving earlier than planned to try and escape any weather, he does have a strategy when it comes to gas.

"I get the gas once I cross out of the New York State border," he said.

AAA says the official start to the holiday weekend is Wednesday.
