The Greene County Sheriff's Office says two people were killed in two days as a result of ATV accidents.
The first incident occurred on Friday, June 14th, on Falke Road in the town of Lexington. Deputies responded to the area for the report of an ATV accident to find a Cub Cadet side by side UTV rolled over down an embankment near the Schoharie Creek. Officials say 18-year-old Jennie Rielle of Lexington was killed in the accident, and a 15-year-old male was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital with injuries from the crash.
The investigation showed that the utility vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed around a corner when the driver, identified as Rielle, lost control and rolled down the embankment coming to rest against a tree. Rielle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second incident occurred on Saturday, June 15th, in a wooded area off H.M. Chadderdon Road in the Town of Cairo. Deputies responded to find 46-year-old Paul Metzler of Cairo unresponsive due to an ATV accident.
The investigation revealed that Metzler was operating a 2005 Honda ATV and was attempting to negotiate terrain near a pond when he lost control of the ATV and it rolled over on top of him into an overflow creek from the pond.
Metzler was pinned underneath the ATV and was under water for several minutes before witnesses were able to get the ATV off. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause and circumstances of the accident are still under investigation at this time.
