GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A suspect assaulted an Albany County investigator Friday while the officer was on duty.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said Investigator William Rice was intentionally struck from behind by another vehicle while on duty in his patrol car in Green Island. Apple said the suspect then exited his vehicle, approached Rice and assaulted him.

More officers arrived on scene and quickly took the suspect into custody. The incident occurred on Lower Hudson Avenue near the Hudson Shores Park.

Apple said Rice is a full-time investigator for Albany County who also works part-time for the Green Island Police Department.

Rice was taken to Albany Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not released the name, age or sex of the suspect. It is unknown why the suspect suddenly attacked Rice.

State Police crash investigators spent most of the evening diagramming the scene.
