ALBANY, N.Y. – Sheridan Avenue was closed for several hours Wednesday after an accident.

Around 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the area of Sheridan Avenue and Chapel Street for a report of an automobile accident. Upon arrival, officers located a damaged vehicle at the intersection with the driver still inside.

The victim, identified as an 82-year-old female, had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the Albany Fire Department. She was taken to Albany Medical Center with injuries she sustained in the crash.

Police said the woman is currently listed in critical condition.

An investigation revealed that the victim was traveling east on Sheridan Avenue when she allegedly struck an occupied FedEx truck and an unoccupied parked vehicle at the intersection. The victim’s vehicle then struck a light pole and came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Christopher Quirk owns Victory Café and said his security cameras caught the entire accident.

“It was incredible,” he said. “Even though I looked at in slow motion, it looked like it was in fast motion she was going so fast. There’s that metal frame on the bottom that they stand on – on the bottom of the FedEx truck – that sliced the car like Swiss cheese.”

The victim’s car was totaled due to the accident. Her windshield was blown out and bags of her belongings covered the sidewalk. Brittany Cross was working at Victory Café when she heard a loud bang.

“I heard a sort of bang, crash,” she described. “And I looked out the window and this post, here, literally lifted off the ground before it fell over, and it did not look like a post. I did not know what it was. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Cross said if the car hadn’t stopped, it could have hit three tables of customers.

“We had a table here, and they’re sitting right here, and they got up and ran because the car’s coming right at them,” she explained. “They ended up going inside to finish their meal. But, yeah, they were startled, shaken up.”

No other injuries were reported during the incident. The driver of the FedEx truck told NEWS10 ABC he was doing okay.

Authorities are still investigating the accident.

The intersection of Sheridan Avenue and Chapel Street was closed for several hours while accident investigators reconstructed the accident and traffic engineering personnel made repairs to the traffic signal.
