SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Schenectady Police Department says the victim of a shooting that occurred late Tuesday night near Mont Pleasant Middle School has died.
Schenectady Police say the victim, 24-year-old William Riddick of Albany, was located in a vehicle at around midnight in the area of 1121 Forest Road with a gunshot wound to the head. They say a second man was in that vehicle and suffered minor injuries, but police aren't releasing many details citing the ongoing investigation. Riddick was treated on scene by members of the Schenectady Fire Department and transported to Ellis Hospital.
"He was treated by members of the Schenectady Fire Department," explained Schenectady Police Lieutenant Mark McCracken , "Transported to Ellis Hospital and later Albany Med and he did later die this morning of his wounds."
Police say Riddick was behind the wheel of a car when he was shot in the head and he lost control of the vehicle, running into a fence near a field on the Mont Pleasant Middle School property and then stopped in a nearby parking lot.
The second car involved was seen nearby, and police were canvassing the surrounding area and neighborhoods to attempt to locate the vehicle on Wednesday morning. Later in the afternoon, Cadets from the Zone 5 Tarining Academy were brought in to do a grid search of the field.
The Cadets were also searching along the route between the two locations. However, police say it is still unclear if the two incidents are connected.
Schenectady City School District Public Information Officer Karen Corona said Mont Pleasant Middle School would still be in session Tuesday without any delays. However, the school was on lockdown as a precaution following the shooting.
No one is in custody related to this incident. Police are not sure if the incident was random. Detectives and officers are still investigating the incident.
