AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Amsterdam Common Council unanimously voted Tuesday to support a casino in the city limits.

The meeting was moved from city hall to the auditorium of the Lynch Academy.

The proposed casino would be off Thruway exit 27 straddling Amsterdam and the town of Florida. Members of city government said the Montgomery County casino is unique.

“It truly is transformational,” Director of Community Development Robert Von Hasseln said.

The Florida town board also unanimously voted in favor of the casino Monday night.

Local support is integral in the state’s licensing process.
