SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Saratoga Springs Arms Fair is being held on January 11 and 12, shortly before new rules pertaining to ammunition will go into effect.

The "Shot Heard Around the World" event called upon gun owners from across New York State to fire a shot at noon on Saturday, in an effort to draw the attention of Governor Cuomo and lawmakers to convince them to modify or repeal the NY SAFE Act.

Fulton County Sheriff Tom Lorey, one of the many law enforcement officials in charge of enforcing the law participated in the protest.

"There's nothing in the safe act that would have stopped any of the mass shootings that have occurred," explained Lorey. "They were all done by criminals with illegal weapons that were stolen from someone else."

Those who support the NY SAFE Act say it is preventing crime and gun violence.  However, Assemblymen Marc Butler does not believe that.

"As I drive around my district up in the North Country, I've seen more signs ‘Repeal the SAFE Act' than ever," he said.

The SAFE Act is law and effective this month with many new rules regarding ammunition, which was a topic on the minds of some Saturday at the Saratoga Arms Fair.

As of January 15th, magazines that have more than a 10 round capacity must be discarded, sold to a dealer or sold out of state. Also by the 15th, magazines that can accept 10 rounds may be possessed but only load 7 seven rounds. Direct internet sales of ammunition are banned, and between individuals unless certain requirements are met.

David Petronis said "You cannot legally give, sell or bequeath, I guess, any ammunition to anyone within the state without a license in order to sell it."

If you have any of the weapons that will be banned or need to be modified, you could visit the arms fair until 3 p.m. on Sunday, to sell them to a dealer.
