Now that the town budget has passed, students, parents and educators in Averill Park are not only relieved, they're also thankful to local voters.
The same group of people who have spent the last several weeks rallying for education, and trying to drum up support for the budget, took to the streets in Averill Park once again Wednesday.
This time, it was to say 'thank you' to local voters.
A 'yes vote' on the budget saved about 35 education jobs that would have otherwise been cut if the proposition had failed.
Averill Park mom and education supporter Susan Poisson-Dollar said, "It was a very tough sell. We knew that we had to pull out all the stops to get the 'yes vote' out there, and we did, and it worked, and we're just thrilled. We're back out here today because we feel like we owe the community a 'thank you.'"
Some educators say it was the phone calls, door knocks, emails, and local ads taken out by supporters that led to the high voter turnout, and ultimate passing of the budget.
