ALBANY, N.Y. – The Times Union Center announced that Paul McCartney will be performing in the Capital Region this summer.

Paul McCartney's 2014 tour was announced on Tuesday. He will be performing at the Times Union Center on July 5. It will be his first performance in the area.

Gordon Thompson is a teacher and chair of the music department at Skidmore College. He is also a Beatles expert.

“This is your chance to see a living icon,” he said. “This is somebody who helped shaped the music culture of today.”

Thompson said nearly all modern contemporary bands can trace their roots to the Beatles.

“When kids today listen to Lady Gaga, or any contemporary artist, they are listening to somebody who had been shaped by the Beatles,” Thompson said. “This is a band that changed the course of western civilization in many ways.”

Baby boomers like Thompson said his first memory of the Beatles is the iconic first performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

“Really was kind of like a change in terms of the way that youth thought about ourselves,” he said.

Thompson said McCartney is coming to the Capital Region on his latest tour to build a fan base. Even though the singer is over 70 years old, building that base and connecting with fans is still a priority.

“Paul McCartney is living proof that music is the elixir of life and rock-and-roll is 100 proof,” Thompson said.

Thompson said that a McCartney concert will consist of music from the Beatles repertoire and also his solo career.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on April 14 on TicketMaster. The tickets range from $29.50 to $290.
