ALBANY, N.Y. – A new bill going through the New York State Capitol could have Albany drivers paying for running a red light.

If passed, the bill would allow Albany to put cameras at a number of traffic lights in the city, taking pictures of any drivers who run a red light, and several state lawmakers are showing their support.

The traffic light cameras, capable of catching those running red lights, would be put at 20 different intersections in Albany. One of those that may receive the camera is along Washington Avenue, which has some residents relieved.

"The last three years in the first three months of the year there's on average 5,000 accidents,” said Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy.

Fahy says it’s that scary statistic from a study conducted by Albany Police that promoted a task force to propose a change. That change is now in the form of a bill that would allow lawmakers to place cameras at red lights in Albany to catch those going through them

“I think that's good. I think that makes me feel safer. I think that's good for the community. There's a lot of accidents in these busy intersections,” said Albany resident Jared Carpenter.

Fahy says violators would face a $50 fine. However, others think the consequence should be even more.

"I think it should be a little bit more in fact you know you're risking other people's lives,” explained Albany resident Paul Butler.
Fahy explains the initiative isn’t about the money the city could make from those running red lights, and residents agree.

"We can free up that time so that they're working on more complicated issues, more time on burglaries and not on those blowing red lights,” said Fahy.

If the bill passes during the summer session, the cameras would most likely not be installed until sometime in 2015.

Ill-conceived over-reaching by this inexperienced, 'experimental' mayor. The Police need to do their job. Not more 'granny state' intrusions.

Well, the thing to do will be to slow down and stop at every light, regardless of color, so that the Albany Police won't be able to target you under their latest revenue scam.
