ALBANY, N.Y. - On Wednesday at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Albany, Bishop Howard Hubbard will be celebrating his last Ash Wednesday mass as Bishop.

Bishop Hubbard celebrated his first mass of the day in Troy at the La Salle Institute, his Alma Mater. He hopes he can continue his traditional mass at the school, even though he will soon retire from his position as Bishop of the Albany Diocese.

"I'm not sure it will be my last. It all depends on the new bishop decides to do. This is my alma mater so to come back here where I celebrated lent for four years back in the 50s is a very wonderful experience for me," said Bishop Hubbard.

More than 400 students were in attendance at the mass, some of them hearing the Bishop in person for the first time.

"He is a God send to make them feel at home and make them feel important and send them a message of hope. He always does that," said La Salle Institute Principal Brother Carl Malacalza.

Wednesday marks the first day of the season of Lent, the most sacred time of the Christian community.

All the students received their ashes, a visual reminder of their faith. Bishop Hubbard hopes the students will take this opportunity to reflect for the next couple of weeks.

"I hope they can take away commitment to make these seven weeks and take the time to grow in Christian discipleship and become better followers of Jesus," he said.

Bishop Hubbard has been leading the Albany Diocese for 37 years. The new bishop elect is Edward Scharfenberger, who will be ordained next month.
