ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany’s Bob Ford Field was the site of a large-scale Ice Bucket Challenge Thursday.

“We are having the largest ice-out Ice Bucket Challenge in the Capital Region,” Shannon Galuski with St. Peter’s Hospital said.

Hundreds of people formed the letters A-L-S on Bob Ford Field wanting to make a difference and have a little fun, too.

“I wanted to do the challenge, but I haven’t been nominated,” Nich Jones said. “So I decided to come out, donate and dump myself.”

Liz Murray was diagnosed with ALS in August 2013.

“You take it one day at a time, and you really count your blessings,” she said.

The ALS association has received almost $8 million since the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on July 29.

“Wow, fantastic, absolutely unbelievable,” Murray said.

Money raised on Thursday will stay local and benefit the St. Peter’s Regional ALS Center. But for Murray, she’s glad of the awareness the challenge has generated because she believes that’s how doctors will find a cure.

“And that’s what’s going to find us a cure,” she said. “We can’t find a cure if we don’t get the word out, and boy, we did.”
